A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Office of Academic Indigenization opened in 2017 as part of Mount Royal University's Indigenous Strategic Plan. Their mandate is to contribute to the implementation of the academic goals within the Indigenous Strategic Plan, specifically Goal 5: Respectful and Inclusive Curricula and Pedagogies. Guided by faculty, student, and community advisory groups, the Office of Academic Indigenization provides leadership for curriculum development, professional development for faculty and staff, and academic support for current and prospective students. The goal of the Office of Academic Indigenization is to help decolonize post-secondary education by creating space for Indigenous voices, perspectives and knowledges within Mount Royal University.
For example: The Aboriginal Education Program is a university preparation program serving Indigenous students. We take in about 80 students per year and provide academic and cultural support while helping students succeed within an institutional setting.
