Sustainable Development Goals

A brief description of the campaign:

Dallas College has committed to using the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework for teaching our students, employees and community members about sustainability. The SDG Campaign centers around three outreach and engagement strategies:

1 - SDGs videos and Resources on the main sustainability web site
2 - SDGs on social media on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
3 - SDGs campus and community events

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

The 17 SDGs are central to all sustainability outreach and engagement. Since launching the college-wide campaign in 2018,
- approximately 32,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members have been reached through the Dallas College SDG main web site: https://dallascollege.edu/dallassupportssdgs
- approximately 21,200 students, faculty, staff, and community members have been reached through social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages of the Office of Sustainability Outreach & Initiatives)
- Many students, faculty and staff have attended campus events that focus on the SDGs

Human Trafficking Awareness

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Dallas College Human Trafficking Awareness has emerged as a college-wide campaign after several years of widely attended campus events and activities. According to a study published by University of Texas and the Governor's Office, 75% of human trafficking is forced labor predominately in the agriculture sector (234,000 workers), and violators of human trafficking also violate environmental protection regulations in most cases. Twenty-five percent of human trafficking in Texas is forced sexual exploitation predominately in urban environments including 79,000 minors and youth victims of sex trafficking.

The U.S. Department of State published reports from 2009 to 2017 on the intersection between environmental degradation and human trafficking, highlighting the interdependence of ecological and socio-economic systems.

Dallas College continues to support this awareness campaign, including a public information web page from the Dallas College Department of Police and Safety, including what agencies or support networks to contact for help or to report human trafficking.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

In 2016, two faculty from fine arts at Dallas College Richland Campus launched an art exhibit, "In You We Trust," displaying 2,000 ceramic coins to represent the annual number of child victims of sex trafficking in the Dallas region. https://rlc5.dcccd.edu/media/tag/sex-trafficking/

In 2018, Dallas College Cedar Valley Campus hosted the Human Trafficking Awareness event with presenters from Texas Health Resources. https://go.activecalendar.com/dcccd/site/cvc/event/human-trafficking/ and the North Lake Campus hosted the A-21 Walk for Freedom, an annual fundraising and awareness event held around the world to fight against modern-day slavery locally and globally. https://go.activecalendar.com/dcccd/site/nlc/event/walk-for-freedom/

In 2019-20, Dallas College hosted a series of Human Trafficking Awareness events at four campuses funded by Sustainability as part of the overall social justice education and engagement initiatives:

- the Brookhaven Institute for Political Studies hosted a speaker panel event featuring Sergeant Thomas Peterson from the Office of the Inspector General for the State of Texas, Ms. Elizabeth Ranade Janis of Praesidium Partners and City of Garland Police Chief Max Geron;
- the Eastfield Campus event featured speakers from Mosaic Family Services and Brooke B. Grona-Robb former District Attorney for Dallas County Division of Crimes Against Children;
- the North Lake Campus event featured speakers from A-21 Anti-Slavery Campaign, New Friends for Life non-profit organization, and two survivors of human trafficking.

Renew Texas 2025 Campaign
Dallas College launched the Renew Texas 2025 campaign in partnership with the Texas Regional Alliance for Campus Sustainability (TRACS), North Texas Renewable Energy Group, City of Dallas, and Earth X. Renew Texas 2025 encourages individuals and organizations to commit to 100% renewable energy. http://dallascollege.edu/RenewTexas2025

Dallas College Student Success Texting Campaign is an initiative that was created to address student needs at the start of and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
