Sustainability Commissioners are chosen within their residence hall and work closely with the Office of Sustainability to reduce the environmental impact of the University through programming and education initiatives in their dorm. Commissioners serve as the formal link between the student body and the Office of Sustainability.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Within each dorm students are elected to commissioner positions that are in charge of organizing projects and events pertaining to their specific area. Sustainability commissioners cultivate environmental awareness by encouraging education and stewardship in the residence halls. At the beginning of each academic year the Office of Sustainability organizes a retreat for the sustainability commissioners where they can both meet each other and receive materials for organizing effective events.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

At the beginning of each school year, the Office of Sustainability hosts a retreat for the sustainability commissioners. At this retreat, members of the Office of Sustainability present on different sustainability programs, initiatives and projects on campus. The commissioners are provided with informational binders including a campus contact list, resources page, event submission forms, and other suggestions for dorm projects. Additionally, a member of the Office of Sustainability hosts a dinner/meeting once a month with all of the commissioners. The meetings are used to touch base with the commissioners, to share events that occurred in the past month, and also to make announcements about up-coming activities.

A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

Each dorm is allotted a total budget for hall council and each commissioner is given an event budget to use throughout the school year. The commissioners may use their event budget for different programs and projects on sustainability for their dorm.
