Has the institution implemented technologies or strategies to reduce the environmental impacts of snow and ice removal?:
Yes

A brief description of the snow and ice removal program, policy, or practice:

Fifteen years ago Notre Dame moved to a liquid ice remover which adheres to the solid surface it is placed on and does not allow ice to stick. Ice is then scraped off easily using manual methods. The use of liquid ice remover allows Notre Dame to decrease the amount of chemicals used during the winter months. Solid salt is also used on some sidewalk areas and does not harm grass. Landscaping uses equipment to remove as much snow and ice as possible to minimize the amount of ice melt needed.
