A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:

The Center for Sustainable Energy at Notre Dame sponsors several outreach programs allowing faculty and students the opportunity to make sustainability-related impacts in the South Bend community. ND Energy sponsors an entire room at Science Alive at the St. Joseph Library, where more than 3,500 area students and their families are invited to explore energy-related lab work. Through ND Energy Research Experience for Teachers, local high school science and math teachers are invited to pair with Notre Dame faculty to conduct a research project in Notre Dame labs. ND Energy also encourages faculty to reach out and develop relationships with sustainability organizations in the community.

The University has also sponsored GreenTown: Michiana, a gathering of community businesses and civic organizations to discuss sustainable community initiatives. Through the College of Science's Minor in Sustainability, students have been able to research sustainable issues prominent in the local community.
