Has the institution advocated for federal, state, and/or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

Tim Sexton, Associate Vice President for Public Affairs, University of Notre Dame & Jessica Brookshire, Associate Director for Public Affairs, University of Notre Dame advocated for LaSalle Trail project's inclusion in the City of South Bend's 2014-2017 Transportation Improvement Program as it is a vital link to connect the community trails together.
The University of Notre Dame is investing in Douglas Road which will be completed in the fall 2013. This project will improve safety and encourage pedestrian transportation by providing exercise paths for travel to and from campus. The project will include 2 HAWK (high-intensity activated crosswalk beacon) systems. However, for this new route to be most useful it needs to be connected to other community trails.
The LaSalle Trail project will include another HAWK crossing at Cleveland Road which will connect to the existing trail in Roseland as well as to the Darden Road Trail. This vital component will also connect to the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail. It is these connections of trail that will make this community a place to safely be able to travel and exercise around our community.
