SPROUT is a peer education group with the purpose of teaching Mizzou students environmentally sustainable life skills. Our peer educators provide programs to residence halls, classrooms, student organizations, and community groups. SPROUT’s role is to foster a generation of environmentally responsible Mizzou students.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Students interested in becoming a peer educator may visit the SPROUT website and download an educator application. After submission of the application, an interview is held and a selection determination is made.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Peer educators will be expected to attend weekly formal training meetings and give presentations on campus. Meetings are Tuesday nights from 6:00-8:00pm.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

There are many staff liaisons to the program for guidance and training purposes including but not limited to Mizzou Campus staff from the sustainability office and campus facilities, faculty, as well as the City of Columbia Sustainability Office. Many educational materials are provided, guest lecturers attend meetings, and funding is supported through the University. The program is administered by the Environmental Leadership Office in the Department of Student Life.

Greeks Going Green

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (2nd program):

Greeks Going Green shall provide a cleaner and healthier environment for both The University of Missouri – Columbia and the City of Columbia. Such a task will be accomplished in two ways: First, Greeks Going Green will educate the Greek community on the necessity and practicality of recycling and sustainable living. Second, we aim to implement recycling programs at every Greek chapter on this campus and maintain each house’s recycling program with assistance from representative liaisons from each chapter. Through this process, Greeks Going Green will induce a spirit of cooperation and helpfulness; create a better understanding about our environment; and encourage vigorous participation at this University.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):

A panel of officers are elected to lead the organization and education in the form of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. In addition, each Greek organization elects a delegate to Greeks Going Green to serve as a liaison between organizations and a peer educator to the rest of the members of their respected house.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

Greeks Going Green hold regular meetings and info sessions that all officers/delegates/peer educators are expected to attend. These meetings serve as both training sessions as well as a guide to sustainable projects that Greek organizations can participate in.

Greeks Going Green are also a part of Missouri's Organization Resource Group which also conducts training sessions. The Organization Resource Group is a viewpoint-neutral group of students dedicated to ushering student organizations through the recognition process, educating student leaders about University policies and resources, consulting organizations on how to meet their goals, and providing financial assistance through the student activity fee for student organizations.
