A brief description of the certificate program:

MU Extension partners with several of the University’s schools and colleges to deliver noncredit continuing education courses, programs and training in a variety of professional trades that contribute to the success of public-sector organizations and private industries throughout Missouri and the nation. One such program is directly related to sustainability:

Human Environmental Sciences Extension (HES) is people oriented. Their goal is to improve the quality of life of people in the environment in which they live, work, learn, and relax. Their work is based on social and natural sciences. Using the latest in modern technology, they provide unbiased, research–based information and access to the knowledge base at the University of Missouri.
Their subject areas of expertise include:
Archetectural Studies
Personal Financial Planning
Human Development and Family Studies
Nutritional Sciences

HES touches the heart of humanity; to develop and nurture human potential and to apply knowledge for the betterment of all.

Beginning with the basics—food, clothing, shelter, finances, family and community—the concentration is placed on providing scientific solutions for contemporary challenges in human lives.

Extending from deep land-grant roots, the College of Human Environmental Sciences is unique in Missouri because it offers a complete array of teaching, research, and Extension program in the human sciences.

Human Environmental Sciences has a national reputation for strong, relevant programs that address the human infrastructure. Central to the mission is a focus on identifying and understanding the problems associated with an increasingly complex and diverse society.

All of the programs strive to maximize the quality of human and family life, with special attention to the needs of the socially and economically vulnerable populations. The realm of expertise is far reaching. It includes family financial education, design of living and working environments, family and human development, community support systems, nutritional wellness, and textile and apparel studies.

The current program efforts may be grouped into the following broad, general categories:
Adolescence
Affordable Housing
Building Strong Families
Child Care
Family Financial Management
Food Safety
Environmentally Friendly, Sustainable Building Practices
Nutrition, Health, and Physical Activity
Parent Education
Successful Aging
Textiles Recycling

In addition to HES, MU also offers noncredit personal enrichment continuing education courses and programs that empower students to learn in any direction their interests take them, without the constraints of traditional degree programs and credit course work. The University of Missouri offers a variety of noncredit topics that appeal to audiences ranging from the more leisurely learner to the most serious of hobbyists.
