Does the institution's physical campus plan include sustainability at a high level?:
Yes
A brief description of how the physical campus plan or amendment includes sustainability:
The original Master Plan Report was developed in 1992 to explore ways for the then 14-year-old college to grow. Since Rio Salado does not have a traditional campus, the Master Plan Report focused on three main points:
1. The existing facilities, whether owned or leased
2. The potential to lease, purchase, or build additional facilities throughout the metropolitan area
3. Design guidelines for new facilities.
Even though sustainability as a specific issue was not addressed, numerous sustainable practices were encouraged including:
•Energy and water efficiency
•Open space and shade
•Reduction in commuter miles based on strategic location of facilities
•Encouraging bicycle commuting by providing bike racks and pathways
•Low water use and locally adapted landscaping practices
The Master Plan is currently being updated to reflect recent acquisitions of additional properties to expand Rio’s in-person adult education and workforce training efforts. The Addendum to the Master Plan focuses on sustainability issues that were not addressed in the original Plan including:
•Locally sourced and rapidly renewable building materials
•Low emitting materials
•Air quality
•Construction waste management
•Recycling
•Daylight and views
•Building commissioning
•Green power
In addition to sustainable building practices, the Master Plan Addendum addresses maintenance and operations and other sustainability related issues.
The year the physical campus plan was developed or adopted:
