General studies information: https://catalog.asu.edu/ug_gsr

General studies requirements through academic year 2023-2024:
A baccalaureate education should prepare students for a particular profession or advanced study and for constructive and satisfying personal, social and civic lives as well. In addition to acquiring a depth of knowledge in a particular academic or professional discipline, students should also be broadly educated, including with knowledge of transdisciplinary solutions that would enable them to address interdependent economic, environmental and social challenges, and they should develop the general intellectual skills they will need to continue learning throughout their lives. Thus, the General Studies requirement complements the undergraduate major by helping students gain mastery of critical learning skills, investigate the traditional branches of knowledge, and develop the broad perspective that frees one to appreciate diversity and change across time, culture and national boundaries.

New institutional learning outcomes, effective Fall 2024 and approved by the Arizona Board of Regents:
- first-year composition [3 credits]
- mathematics [3 credits]
- Arts and Humanities [6 credits]
- Global Communities, Societies and Individuals [3 credits]
- Governance and Civic Engagement [3 credits]
- American Institutions [3 credits];
- Global Sustainability [3 credits]
- Scientific Thinking [8 credits]
- Quantitative Reasoning [3 credits]

As a mechanism to assess how well ASU is contributing to the knowledge, skills, and personal development of its students, graduating seniors are asked to complete the ASU Graduating Senior Report Card. The general undergraduate education section seeks to check achievement of ASU's general studies requirements and asks graduating seniors if they received instruction from ASU in areas such as:
- Understanding ethical standards in your field
- Improving interpersonal skills (teamwork, ethics, leadership)
- Incorporating multiple perspectives when solving problems
- Engaging with the community to address global and local issues
- Demonstrating social responsibility
- Sustainability (Addressing the balance between environmental, social, and economic concerns)

Total number of graduates from degree programs:
