A brief description of the institution’s carbon mitigation projects:

Peer-reviewed Carbon Offset Project: Urban Forestry
ASU worked with the cities of Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe to plant over 908 trees. The trees planted are part of Community Offset Bundles or third-party verified carbon offsets combined with local tree plantings. The trees planted to-date will sequester an estimated 3,500 tons of carbon, support the ASU Urban Climate Research Center’s urban heat island research, and reduce the need to purchase offsets in the future. This project is supported by ASU's Carbon Fund and private donations.

Innovative offset project: Carbon Sink at ASU West
The Carbon Sink at ASU West consists of 1,000 native trees planted in November 2020 with support from Northern Arizona University. The project expands native landscapes, sequesters carbon, and provides a living laboratory at ASU’s West campus.

Trees are inventoried on a rolling 5-year basis using a GIS tool to ensure they are still alive. A recent audit (Feb. 2022) of the Carbon Sink at ASU West determined a 96% survival rate.
