A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

Intersession Energy Saving Initiative

Starting in 2008, every winter break the university adheres to strict energy conservation guidelines to save money and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the campus. There are two phases to the initiative. During Phase One, which runs two weeks from the end of the fall semester, building temperature is kept at 55 degrees, and most offices are closed. In Phase Two building temperature is kept at 62 degrees for three weeks from the beginning of January. The residence halls are maintained at minimum temperature, and electricity is turned off in all unoccupied residences. While many other schools run similar intersessions initiatives, UAlbany is unique in the length and level of service reduction, including heat, hot water, and electricity.
