Does the sustainability office have initiatives specifically designed to recruit sustainability employees from underrepresented groups?:
Yes

A brief description of the initiatives specifically designed to recruit sustainability employees from underrepresented groups:

The Climate Justice & Sustainability Hub recently hired two new employees. The office made an extensive effort to reach out to local and regional environmental justice groups when posting and recruiting for the job. The Hub also worked closely with the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Culture in the Planning, Real Estate & Facilities Office to identify new and local areas for recruitment.

Does the sustainability office ensure that sustainability employees complete DEI training?:
Yes

A brief description of the DEI trainings for sustainability employees:

Along with the university-wide trainings, employees of the Climate Justice & Sustainability Hub are expected to participate in racial equity and environmental justice trainings and professional development activities. This is included in the Performance Review process to ensure employees take annual trainings.

In addition, the Climate Justice & Sustainability Hub is in the process of developing a Climate Justice Action Plan (CJAP). Through that process, the Hub is developing a racial equity and environmental justice training program that will support the CJAP process but also be available to future employees and others engaged in the work.

Does the sustainability office regularly collaborate on events, projects, or initiatives with the institution’s DEI office/program and/or organizations that support underrepresented groups on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of events, projects, or initiatives during the previous year developed in collaboration with the DEI office/program and/or organizations that support underrepresented groups on campus:

The Hub meets regularly with staff and organizes or co-hosts events with the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and several other offices and departments including: the Social Impact Lab, the Social Justice Resource Center, the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy and the Center for Community-Engaged Teaching & Research. This group meets monthly to share ideas and opportunities for collaboration on community engagement related to social and climate justice.

The Hub engaged several of these groups for the spring 2022 launch of the Climate Justice & Sustainability Hub. The event focused on the role of Northeastern in the climate justice movement and included speakers from the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, the Social Impact Lab, the student organization Sunrise NU and the Dukakis Center.

Does the sustainability office or committee include at least one individual with formal DEI and/or environmental or social justice responsibilities?:

The role of the Executive Director of the Climate Justice and Sustainability Hub is to lead the Hub in achieving its draft goals that directly reflect its commitment to environmental and social justice:
o Create campuses that are models of sustainable, healthy, and inclusive communities
o Contribute to a just and regenerative economy, both locally and globally
o Collaborate with local communities to build equitable and sustainable neighborhoods
