Western appeals to students with a broad world view, those seeking to study, engage with and eventually lead in the global community. Students from more than 100 countries share in classroom experiences that broaden personal perspectives and understanding. Beyond campus, students are engaged in a variety of international study-abroad, research and volunteer opportunities. We offer more than 400 combinations of majors, minors, and specializations in 12 faculties and more than 90 undergraduate programs; more than 70 master’s and 50 doctoral programs.

In 2009, a new provincial Regulation was approved, mandating the quantification and reporting of GHG emissions starting in 2011. Western decided to act proactively and during summer 2010 conducted a comprehensive inventory of its GHG emissions from Main Campus. We now report our carbon emissions to federal and provincial agencies every year. On top of that, Western has the emission assertions verified by an accredited third party and voluntarily report them to AASHE under its STARS program.

Western was founded in 1878 and spans over 450 hectares of land. We take pride in our landscape and beautiful buildings. We strive to incorporate sustainability into the maintenance of our green spaces, as well as into the planning and design process of new buildings and renovations. This includes promoting energy conservation in the operation of facilities, provision of facilities and land to support alternate transportation arrangements, and the protection of natural and wetland areas throughout the campus. Building designs will recognize the use of buildings as learning tools and offer examples of sustainable designs for our students.

In 2007, Hospitality Services recognized the need to take responsibility and action with regards to being more sustainable. They quickly realized "Sustainability" encompasses so much.

They realized they had influence in Western's day-to-day operations, personal lives, as well as in the London community. Baby steps and small victories would be the stepping stones to success. That decided, they broke down our approach into three smaller definitions we could more easily categorize.

Ecology: Our commitment to the environment through composting and the introduction to organic/fair trade foods.

Culture: Our commitment to the community, to educate and increase awareness, and reduce, re-use and divert materials from land-fills.

Technology: Continuation and improvement of our recycling program, purchasing energy-efficient equipment and implementing new green technologies as they become available.

The best starting place for us was to determine what was already being done that was proactive or positive for the environment. From there, it was a little easier to recognize other initiatives and set goals.

Western acknowledges the potential negative environmental impacts associated with development. As a result, Western has committed to incorporating sustainable practices into all aspects of operations. In alignment with Western’s Policy on Environment and Sustainability, Procurement Services will endeavour to purchase products and services that meet a comprehensive range of sustainability criteria that mirror the University’s values, sustainability principles and goals.

Procurement Services have developed the Sustainable Purchasing Guide as a tool to share our recommendations for purchasing products that balance economic, environmental and social benefits, in an effort to further advance Western's sustainability efforts.

Western maintains that there needs to be safe and efficient networks to support pedestrian, bicycle and bus traffic as well as provide for visitor parking. Western’s campus-wide system of pathways and sidewalks provides good pedestrian interconnection between most points on campus. At some of the busier crosswalks, flashing lights can be activated for pedestrian safety.

Western University is committed to water conservation. We are currently undergoing an energy and water master plan in order to ensure we are taking a coordinated and integrated approach to water management on campus. Through this project, we are seeking opportunities for savings. We are looking at the operation of existing equipment, and looking to incorporate new technologies, including renewables.
