Euromed Management has a pedagogical approach that not only relies on learning from books. We ask our students to step out of the class room and carry out projects. From sustainability to entrepreneurship, these projects have brought together the school and its students. The CSR Department works closely with student associations and sustainability projects to in order to spread the “sustainability virus” around the campus. More than 500 students carry-out “sustainable” projects each year. Together we organize events; we develop projects; we change mindsets.<< show less

Euromed Management is a business school that has made the strategic decision to not offer a degree in sustainability or sustainable business. It is our belief that sustainability must be mainstreamed into curriculum not into a specific program. By doing this we seek to train “responsible managers” in finance, marketing, sales, etc. In all of our bachelor programs students have obligatory sustainability courses and many of our electives are sustainability related as well.
Going beyond the class room, every student is required to carry out 1-2 projects we call PRO-ACTs. Many of these can be defined as immersive experiences. Of the 849 PRO ACTs carried out last year, 110 were in sustainability. Each Pro Act can include as many as 15 students.

Research is at the heart of scientific knowledge: undertaking and disseminating research is central to Euromed Management’s mission and vision.
Research at Euromed Management is structured through research priorities which correspond to faculty skills and expertise and to the strategic positioning of the business school. They further guide choices of partnerships with businesses and organisations and the development of research chairs.
The business models that research will develop in the future imply new concepts, new measurements and establishing new relationships. We engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding of the role, dynamics, stakes and impact of corporations, markets, cultures and consumers. Approaching these topics certainly requires scientific skills and expertise but also creativity and certainly changes in mindsets.
In accordance with Euromed Management’s Strategic Plan, there are five research priorities that re-group publications, projects, and events alongside a number of research chairs and think-tank activities. LEED is a very North American certification tool that has not been available to French schools until very recently. LEED certification has not been particularly popular since French new building and construction laws already require energy efficient and ecological standards. For example a new law was passed in 2012 states that all new construction must consume less than 50 kWh/m2 where as former legislation put the bar at 150 kWh/m2.
Since the 1990 a French certification program was put in place. The HQE, high environmental quality, certification is carried out by AFNOR. Other European initiatives have also “landed” while some uses use ISO norms.( HQE®, Leed®, Breeam®, H&E®, NF Logement démarche HQE®....). This richness leads to a number of ways to certify buildings, LEED being one of the less used/newer labels.
Another specifies in French Higher Education Institutions is that many schools are located in historically classified monuments and this leads to a number of difficulties when it comes to remodeling.
Our school does not have certified buildings; indeed we have never sought certification. We are not the owners of our buildings.
However, our main campus is located in a National Parc and the operations and maintenance teams work daily to reduce our environmental impact. Like many French schools, we have sustainable practices without having formalized policies or guidelines.

The only French business school situated in a national park, the sustainable management of our campus is a challenge and an obligation. This means that we must work on managing our resources and waste, protect our biodiversity and fight against climate change. In 2009 the school signed the Copenhagen Declaration and agreed to lower its greenhouse gas admissions by 40% by the year 2020. Among our greatest challenges is reducing our carbon footprint during an expansion phase.<< show less

Responsible eating has become more than a trend. An increasing number of consumers have started giving priority to food that is good for their bodies but also good for the environment.
Campus Responsables, network of French higher education institutions committed to sustainability has launched a label called “Restaurant Durable” or the “Sustainable Restaurant” label. This label comes with responsible food services guidelines that were produced by a working group of schools, nutritionists, NGOs and food service providers.
The objective of this project is to incite collective food services (cantines) to adopt a more responsible approach. Euromed Management is among the six schools piloting the new label.<< show less

Energy Consumption and production is a recent dossier for our school. Since the school rents its buildings from the Chamber of Commerce, we do not have the ability to renovate heavily our infrastructure. Over the next three years the Chamber of Commerce has agreed to replace our window with more energy efficient options. Every new wing and remodeled sections is equipped with up to date insulation, ventilation, etc.
Despite this context, the school has made some investments and has managed to decrease the per capita energy consumption. Euromed also installed 3229 square feet of solar panels – a drop in the ocean – but an important step.

Euromed Management’s main campus is located in the heart of the Callanque National Park. This park is one France’s largest natural reserves. This location obliges the school to follow a number of regulations in our environment management of our grounds. A project is currently underway to harmonize our grounds management with that of the national park and create a “biodiversity” walk through the campus.<< show less

Responsible purchasing is at the heart of every CSR strategy. At Euromed Management we not only teach our students on this topic, we also have a research chair on sustainable procurement. In order to be coherent we have launched a project to improve our own purchasing practices. Since the creation of this project in 2009 we have trained our purchasing department on the essentials and have integrated our purchasing CSR Officer in the work of the research chair.
Unfortunately, French law prohibits a number of “tools” that a responsible purchaser may use to discriminate “positively”. In addition to this, our school shares a number of purchasing markets with the public sector and we cannot influence every acquisition. The responsible purchasing project has managed to influence our institutions practices, but there is still a long way to go.

Transportation represents 91% of our carbon footprint. This is why the school decided to put in place a “sustainable transportation” project in 2012-2013. With the help of students, the CSR department carried out a survey and launched a number of projects. One of these projects is “Totem”. Through Totem, the school will be installing electrical car and bike charging stations and reserved parking. The cars and bikes that use these stations can park and charge for free. A number of electrical cars will also be offered to students and staff through an innovative car-sharing rental start-up. The school is already registered on a carpooling website, but this too is being “revamped” for the fall 2013 intake.<< show less

One of the main challenges every committed organisation faces is how to disseminate the CSR strategy into every level of operations. At Euromed Management we chose to adopt a systemic and transversal approach to this challenge. After creating the CSR Department in 2007, in 2009 the school created a group of “CSR Officers” that come from every department of the school.
Currently there are 30 CSR Officers, nearly 10% of our staff, nominated by management members. In addition to their regular job duties, the CSR Officers are mandated to serve as a link between the school’s CSR strategy and policies and the service they represent. This means that they are not only overseeing the infusion of CSR into their department, they also give feedback and bring to the table ideas and projects suggested by their colleagues.
Euromed Management’s strategic orientation is increasingly based on constructive stakeholder consultation. Impacting virtually every aspect of business, from products and processes, to company practices and governance – stakeholders are the critical friends of modern management. Our sustainability approach is no different.

Diversity is more than a notion, it is a reality. Whether recruiting students or staff members recruiters follow an anti-discrimination policy. Our goal is that the school will one day reflect the realities of French society demographics (National Green Plan Objective for 2020). To achieve this objective and to change mindsets, both long-term and short-term actions must be carried out. This is why scholarships, grants, apprentices and partnerships have been developed by the school.
Combined with efforts to diversify its student profile, Euromed Management also works towards making higher education more accessible for all. Through tutoring programmes such as Coach me I’m Famous and the Passport Avenir– corporate mentors help students build their social network and corporate culture capital.
Over 10 student projects support this policy. Since 2006 the association Phoenix has received the “Cordées de la Réussite” a Government Grant to fund their activities in “priority education zones”. In 2010-2011 70 students from Euromed Management mentored over 150 students from secondary schools in Marseille; providing over 5300 hours of tutoring.

Since January 2, 2010, human resources management, previously under the responsibility of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIMP) was taken over by the HR Department of the new Euromed Management Association. Since the change in governance, the main challenges to the school’s human resource policies has been managing the hybrid character of the contractual arrangements with the employees and the diversity of institutional cultures from which they originate.
In less than a decade, Euromed Management has gone from a regional school to an internationally accredited and renowned institution. This spectacular growth is not only due to the vision of the School’s Directors – but also the involvement and dedication of the school’s employees. As any organization with heavy growth, the school has not escaped the heavy workloads and work related stress that such growth entails.
Euromed Management is a school in perpetual evolution and with change come new challenges. As we strive towards being a “best places to work” we also seek to be coherent with the school’s mission – training responsible managers.
In 2011-2012 recruitment levels remained high and the school signed company-wide agreements which helped improve working conditions for staff members. For example, the agreements put in place allow for more flexible and adapted work schedules and they also created a time-savings account (CET). Through these agreements staff members can now enroll in courses provided by Euromed Management as well as apply for further professional training. This education and training policy is a strategic tool for the school that allows us to both increase staff competence and skills while responding to training requests.
Wellbeing in the workplace was one of the main challenges for the HR Department this year. In July 2012 the school carried out its second yearly internal survey to evaluate employee satisfaction with their work environment and put in place corrective action plans. Among the action plans put in place after the first survey were working groups on training and on internal communication. Another result of this process is the launching of an audit on psychosocial risk factors in July 2012. This audit should provide the school with a better understanding of work-educed stress and provide management teams with action plans to improve working conditions.

As Euromed has grown, so has the school’s commitment to community development. Investing in the region, sites have been opened in Avignon, Bastia, Toulon and Marrakech. Emphasis is also placed on regional social responsibility in regards to international academic standards. The contributions of the student body are particularly noticeable due to the school’s project based teaching approach (Pro-Act).
Promoting the attractiveness of the region, helping to create and launch new businesses and products, working with companies to improve their financial and social performance, contributing to academic debates around the world – these are just examples of how we give back to our local, national and international communities.
Last year, over 3000 student projects were carried out locally and internationally. Out of these Pro-Acts, 119 were sustainable or “earth” projects. From tutoring local youths to promoting social entrepreneurship in Africa, the student body plays an active role in our sustainable development approach.
