The Committee on Sustainability (COS), formed in fall 2008 with the approval of W&M President Taylor Reveley, is charged with developing, planning and recommending to the President strategies for implementing the College’s Sustainability Policy, and integrating sustainability into the life of the College. COS not only taps W&M’s intellectual capital, but also feeds into and benefits from its teaching, research, and service missions. COS consists of faculty, staff and student members.

Mission Statement
The Committee on Sustainability is dedicated to:

Promoting a culture of sustainability through the College community by engaging the powerful education, research and service traditions of the College;
Promoting sustainable practices that recognize the need to manage human interactions with ecosystems to minimize impacts of use, conserve the regenerative capacity of the natural environment, and promote its ecological integrity;
Serving as a faithful steward of the Student Green Fee through prudent management of those fees to maximize their impact on sustainability;
Building an operational model that ensures the long-term future of the College's commitment to sustainability; and
Implementing and promoting the President's Policy on Sustainability through full engagement of faculty, students and staff.

Mission
The Office of Sustainability strives to foster collaboration across the university in support of sustainability through environmental, social, and economic responsibility. The office is a resource for the entire W&M community and engages students in the process of creating change in a manner intended to help them become leaders who will influence the world. It is managed by the Director of Sustainability and employs 3 student interns.

Goals
Facilitate holistic change toward a sustainable campus and world
Create a sense of community that drives sustainable progress
Integrate sustainability into the operations, academics, and policy of W&M
Provide educational experiences and resources to faculty, students, and staff so that they may be ambassadors of change

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

The Committee on Sustainability approves projects funded by the Green Fee every fall and spring semester which allow faculty, students, and staff to be agents of change at W&M. The many COS working groups continued their efforts which included data gathering on stormwater, a greenhouse gas audit, a used dorm item collection, and multiple events. The Director of Sustainability created a green revolving fund in 2016, coordinated multiple events, reworked guidelines and instituted Sustainability Forums where those active and/or interested in sustainability could share their accomplishments and needs to help create a more cohesive sustainability climate.
