The University of Calgary's institutional boundaries for its STARS Report submission were defined using the Global Reporting Initiative's Boundary Protocol. Boundaries are determined with respect to impact and operational control/influence. The following sites, for which the University of Calgary has full operational control and whose operations noticeably impact institutional performance, have been included in the STARS Report:

- Foothills (Medical) Campus
- Spyhill Campus
- Olympic Volunteer Center
- University Research Centre
- Rothney Observatory
- Barrier Lake Kananaskis Research Station
- R.B. Miller Station
- Petro-Canada Research Building.
Together, these sites comprise over 30,000 students, 4700 staff and more than 100 buildings totaling over 9 million gross square feet. Sites excluded include Calgary Technologies, Bamfield Marine Science Centre, Qatar Campus and Downtown Campus.
