A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:
The U of C recycles electronic waste through a contractor that responsibly deals with the electronic waste. The contractor, E-cycle Solutions, has a comprehensive Operational Health and Safety program. E-cycle has a 98% recovery rate, and does not send waste to non-OECD countries. More information on how e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers' basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met can be found here:

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:
The U of C recycles electronic waste by responding to Equipment/Furniture Disposal Service Request Forms to the Supply Chain Management department. If the materials are still on good condition, they are sold at the U of C's weekly ""Surplus Sale"". Electronic waste in poor condition is certifiably and safely recycled through a contractor.
The Students' Union also recycles electronic waste through a different contractor.
A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :
Cell phones and rechargeable batteries can be recycled at various locations across campus where drop boxes are available. Materials are sent to a non-profit organization that makes rechargeable batteries into new batteries and stainless steel products, and refurbishes and resells or recycles cell phones.
