A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
In partnership with Xerox, the University of Calgary has achieved significant improvements in the environmental impact of printing services on campus, which includes energy consumption and waste. The partnership, called Project Imagine, provides on campus solutions for printing, copying, faxing, document design and communications.
The University of Calgary has achieved a significant reduction in the quantity of paper consumed on campus since the start of project Imagine. Since April 2006, the university has decreased annual paper use from 72 million sheets to 52 million sheets. This is the result of migrating to multi-function devices (MFDs) from non-networked single function machines. MFDs have provided the functionality necessary to make double sided printing the default on printers across campus, which has had a significant impact on paper consumption.
In addition to reducing paper use, switching to new multi function devices has allowed the university to purchase more energy efficient machines. All new Xerox devices on campus are Energy Star compliant. This has resulted in a 9% reduction in energy use.
