Start Date End Date
Performance Year Jan. 1, 2016 Dec. 31, 2016
Baseline Year Jan. 1, 2012 Dec. 31, 2012

A brief description of when and why the building energy consumption baseline was adopted (e.g. in sustainability plans and policies or in the context of other reporting obligations):

Baseline was adopted in line with Ministry of Energy mandated Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan (2014-2019) development and was the same baseline used in the campus' 2016 STARS report.

During the baseline year there was no solar generation on site.

Gross floor area of building space:
Performance Year Baseline Year
Gross floor area of building space 116,667.40 Gross square meters 108,789.40 Gross square meters

Source-site ratio for grid-purchased electricity:
2.05

Total building energy consumption per unit of floor area:
Performance Year Baseline Year
Site energy 0.11 MMBtu per square meter 0.12 MMBtu per square meter
Source energy 0.18 MMBtu per square meter 0.21 MMBtu per square meter

Percentage reduction in total building energy consumption (source energy) per unit of floor area from baseline:

Degree days, performance year (base 65 °F / 18 °C):

Heating degree days 3,748 Degree-Days (°C)
Cooling degree days 346 Degree-Days (°C)

Floor area of energy intensive space, performance year:

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency (e.g. outreach and education efforts):

The university conducts a variety of initiatives to shift individual attitudes: some initiatives include monthly outreach booths on sustainable best practices (lights out when you leave, unplug electronics, layer up before you raise thermostat, etc); host workshops for staff and students along with tours of energy-efficient technologies around campus. https://sites.uoit.ca/gogreen/initiatives/guide-to-going-green/index.php

A brief description of energy use standards and controls employed by the institution (e.g. building temperature standards, occupancy and vacancy sensors):

Aim to exceed ASHRAE energy standards and build to LEED silver standards.

A brief description of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and other energy-efficient lighting strategies employed by the institution:

100% incandescent bulb phased out to LED; implementing LED-only standard. Currently replaced fixtures and bulbs to LEDs in a variety of buildings on campus -UA West, St Gregory's Day Care, DTA, DTB, the tunnel, and ACE/ENG mechanical rooms (with occupancy sensors) and Pot lights in UA East, UB, LIB. The newest building, SIRC was designed with LED lighting throughout and has occupancy sensors and day light harvesting in the building.

A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:

Heat Mirror windows with a center of glass thermal resistance matching that of 25mm of polystyrene. Windows are super high efficiency, with special thermal properties to maximize the use of passive solar heat metal oxide-coated window glazing that blocks 99.5% of UV rays.

A brief description of co-generation employed by the institution, e.g. combined heat and power (CHP):

Cogeneration Plant
A ground source heat exchanger is used as the primary source for heating and cooling at the central plant. Thermal energy produced at the plant is used to heat existing and new buildings on the Durham College and Ontario Tech campus, while electricity produced is used to displace electrical load from the provincial supply grid.

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to replace energy-consuming appliances, equipment and systems with high efficiency alternatives (e.g. building re-commissioning or retrofit programs):

Retrofitting lights in classrooms, labs, mechanical rooms to LED and installing occupancy sensors/day light harvesting. Installing numerous Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs); new Demand Control Kitchen ventilation (DCKV) system in the CIC building, building panel and control upgrades, new energy-efficient boilers at St. Gregory's Daycare, new heat pump, etc.
