The Sustainability Committee encompasses members from a variety of departments and faculties (both staff and faculty); throughout committee meetings members are trained on sustainability best practices which they then share and train their colleagues in their respective departments, acting as campus sustainability ambassadors. Peers share this training with other staff via emails and in-person meetings as well as promoting sustainability related events. The Committee developed the Green Office Program to help streamline, track and measure these impacts.
A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:
To join the Sustainability Committee, staff/faculty generally volunteer to join the committee for one-year or two-years, but members may also be appointed by the Department Chairs. The members of the committee generally have an interest or passion for sustainability. Committee members are then appointed as the Green Office Ambassador of their department or faculty.
A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
Committee members commit to attend at minimum four meetings per year and receive online training guides or resources (links to research, presentations and initiatives) to share with their respective teams. At the end of each meeting action items are created outline what members will be sharing with their departments covering topics including but not limited to sustainable transportation, health and wellness, energy reduction, sustainable procurement, waste and water along with the environmental protection (what can be done). The Ontario Tech Office of Infrastructure and Sustainability presents and shares the campus' sustainability policies, procedures and best practices with the committee members to disseminate to their colleagues, along with sustainability activities both taking place locally and globally. The Committee developed the Green Office Program where the committee members act as ambassadors for their departments while teaching and educating other colleagues to actively participate in the sustainability movement, creating 'green offices' across the campus.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):
The Senior Leadership Team supports the Sustainability Committee; all committee members are approved and supported by supervisors/managers/directors to dedicated time to attend meetings, training sessions and sustainability events, within reason. Creating the Green Office Online platform was developed by the Sustainability Committee and Communications department (staff hours). Other general costs (printing cost of materials, potential prizes for staff/ faculty for Best Green Office) would be covered by the Office of Infrastructure and Sustainability Office, within reason.
