A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:

The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has established $13.70/hr., $28,606 annual, as the current UC “livable wage.” This wage was recommended by UCOP Compensation as the minimum rate which is required to be paid by UC campuses to both represented and non-represented employees. The “livable wage” at UC has its foundation in contract negotiations with AFSCME, who represents the University’s lowest paid employees in service positions. An evaluation was done by UCOP Compensation and Labor Relations in a joint effort to develop a wage figure. That wage figure is reflected in the current contract with AFSCME contract which is effective February 12,2009-January 31, 2013. It is the responsibility of Human Resources to review offer letters and payroll records to ensure no base salary below this minimum level is implemented.
