A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:

In 2009, the University of California, Merced Foundation received an anonymous donation of $500,000 to establish the UC Merced Renewable Energy Scholarship/Fellowship Fund. This fund is used to award scholarships and/or fellowships to UC Merced undergraduates or graduate students who display an interest in the field of renewable energy. The undergraduate scholarship portion of this fund is administered by the UC Merced Sustainability Committee. To date, $50,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to students displaying an interest in renewable energy research and education. The graduate fellowship portion of this fund is administered by the UC Merced Energy Research Institute (UCMERI) and the UC Merced Vice Chancellor for Research. To date, $150,000 in fellowship money has been awarded to graduate students working on renewable energy projects.

Yes

A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage faculty research in sustainability:

It is the mission of the three UC Merced institutes engaged in sustainability research—the Sierra Nevada Research Institute (SNRI), the UC Merced Energy Research Institute (UCMERI) and the University of California Advanced Solar Technologies Institute (UC Solar)—to encourage multidisciplinary research in sustainability. Faculty at these institutes cooperate on collaborative research proposals and have access to research support that is not available to unaffiliated faculty members. This includes student support, as well as funds for equipment and materials to support research projects.
