The Alliance to Save Energy's Green Campus program at UC Merced is on the cutting edge of sustainability. The program has four primary pillars of focus: energy efficiency, water conservation, green work force development, and academic infusion.

Peer-to-peer outreach activities have included tabling, electronic outreach, fraternity/sorority partnerships and movie nights.

Educators can sign up to be club members and self-select into the the peer educator program.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Students are trained mostly through the Green Campus program. Training includes introduction to campus resources and off campus partnerships to provide up-to-date energy efficient ideas.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

The Green campus program is support through paid internships as well as Faculty and staff who work with various campus partners to help promote green campus activities.

Energy Service Corps

The UC Merced Energy Service Corps is part of a national program that aims to reduce energy use through education and service. I

The local chapter includes a team of 10 board members who train and recruit volunteers to serve the Merced community.

During the past year, Energy Service Corps educated Merced residents about energy-efficient alternatives for light bulbs. Fluorescent light bulbs, energy efficient tips and weather strips were instruments used to reduce electricity bills.

The team also uses phone calls and follow-up emails are sent after the informational events to track reduction of energy.

In November 2011, the group launched Project Axiom: Home Assessment Blitz, in which 100 students and residents will aim to collect 150 home surveys from residents in the Merced area. . Volunteers went door to door asking residents about their energy use, explaining ways to conserve energy and save money. Members of student and Greek organizations participated.

In coming months, the organization will visit K-12 schools to hold energy-efficient workshops. The local chapter is getting ready to give workshops in Spanish to target the Latino community.

Students can sign up to support and become members of the Energy Service Corps. Two club leaders are paid interns who complete an application process to help meet the Energy Service corps community program needs.

Students receive formal training on conducting house calls to complete an energy audit. Students go from door to door offering free home assessments.

The program has received funding from its national organization as well as funding from UC Merced student government - Associated Students of UC Merced (ASUCM).
