Has the institution developed a definition of sustainability research?:
Yes

A copy of the institution's definition of sustainability research:

The dean of the school of engineering formed a committee to advise the school on a strategic focus for urban systems and sustainability. This committee viewed and defined sustainability as including security and robustness, two factors not always included in traditional definitions. The follow excerpt from the committee's final report illustrates this point: "A central Rice objective will be to advance a view of urban systems that fully recognizes the relationship between sustainability, security, and robustness." Rice School of Engineering sustainability research and educational programs are developed with this enhanced view in mind.
