A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:

In 2021, Yale advocated for a municipal bike share program to serve both the university and surrounding community. This was supported with a donation of bicycles and by providing a business plan for the city’s use. The New Haven Parking Authority is now working to operationalize this program, with plans to launch in 2023.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:

Members of Yale’s Traffic Safety Committee advocated to support a new pedestrian safety law that went into effect on October 1, 2021. This law helps provide protections to pedestrians and cyclists across the state, encouraging and enabling more active transportation, transportation equity, and reduced vehicle emissions. Yale’s Traffic Safety Committee is an advisory subcommittee of the University Safety Committee chaired by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and includes members of top administrative units across the university (Provost, Office of Federal and State Relations, Public Safety, Facilities Planning, etc.).

Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the national level:

The Center for Business and the Environment at Yale (CBEY) offers a research fellowship in partnership with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Office of Public Participation that allows the fellow to explore the role increased public participation and increased diversity of voices in FERC proceedings may have in supporting a transition to a clean energy economy. The fellows duties include assisting the OPP in developing a communications and outreach strategy to reach the OPP’s target underrepresented communities, analyzing recent historical participation in FERC proceedings, and reviewing best practices for public participation by historically underrepresented groups in federal and state administrative proceedings. University advocacy for this participation is exemplified by the funding of this position and Yale's partnership with FERC.

Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the international level:

More than 20 students from Yale attended COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, taking part in critical decision-making and discussions centered on reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
