Name of the campaign:
Greening Move-Out & Resale

A brief description of the campaign:

During move-out in the spring, the Ecology Representatives (EcoReps) collect items left for donation outside of dorm rooms. The EcoReps team then stores these items over the summer in preparation for a fall Resale. While most of the items collected by EcoReps are sold at the resale, other items are given for free to students in the University Freshman Scholars Institute, held in July for first-generation and low-income students, or donated to charities such as Goodwill and Grad Bag, an organization that gives items to low-income students to prepare them for college. Additionally, students in the Scholars Institute Fellows Program are given a discount coupon. Over 500 students attended the third annual 2019 Move-In Resale and bought nearly 2,000 items, diverting some 15 tons of waste from landfills. Every item at the resale — including mirrors, fridges, futons, couches, tables, and chairs — was sold at a discounted rate to students.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

In total, the Resale made $11,400, all of which will contribute to next year’s program, with the program’s goal of breaking even rather than making a profit. The ultimate goal of the program is to divert items from the landfill and provide low-income students with gently used dorm items at low cost, furthering an ethos of sustainability by instilling reuse behaviors.

Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Revise Your Ride (RYR)

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

In order to encourage employees to leave their cars at home, Parking and Transportation Services developed the Revise Your Ride (RYR) program. This program offers enhanced benefits and incentives to participate in one of five commuter programs in lieu of a parking permit: bike/walk, carpool, vanpool, transit reimbursement, or NJ Transit bus pass. RYR staff ambassadors who have been participating since the program's inception assist with promoting program events, news, and generally serve as advocates for alternative commutes.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

July 1 2018 to June 30 2019: 1,664 Alternative Commuters (25% of total commuter population)
340 Carpoolers (5% of total)
44 Vanpoolers (7%% of total)
569 Mass Transit participants (9%% of total)
658 Bike/Walkers (10% of total)
