Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory within the previous three years that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:

The University uses its own internal GHG accounting system, which uses campus utilities data and emissions factors determined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
No

A brief description of the GHG inventory verification process:
---

Documentation to support the GHG inventory verification process:
---

Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
Weight in MTCO2e
Stationary combustion 64,155 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources (mobile combustion, process emissions, fugitive emissions) 897 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
65,052 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year (market-based):
Weight in MTCO2e
Imported electricity 37,746 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Imported thermal energy 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year:
37,746 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross GHG emissions from biogenic sources, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Does the GHG emissions inventory include Scope 3 emissions from the following sources?:
Yes or No Weight in MTCO2e
Business travel No ---
Commuting Yes 7,375 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Purchased goods and services No ---
Capital goods No ---
Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 No ---
Waste generated in operations Yes 424 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources No ---

Total Scope 3 GHG emissions, performance year:
7,799 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of how the institution accounted for its Scope 3 emissions:

Category scope: Category 7 inventory includes emissions from employee commuting for the University’s benefits-eligible employees and graduate students. This scope is consistent with the current reporting of single occupancy vehicle (SOV) rates.

This inventory covers the period from July 1, 2019 to March 20, 2020, due to the University’s COVID-19 response and remote work policies in place starting March 2020.

Excluded from this inventory are:
• Commuting data from March 21, 2020 to June 30, 2020 as the majority of University employees began remote work during New Jersey’s Stay-at-Home executive orders.
• Contract or affiliate employees due to limited data
• Visiting employees or students as the University considers these employees of their home institutions
• On-Campus Graduate and Undergraduate students (live on campus)
• Employees outside of NJ, NY, and PA – less frequent commutes to campus

Inventory methodology: Average secondary activity data is used to estimate distance traveled and mode of transport, in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol accounting standards:
• Average daily commuting distances of typical employees
• Average modes of transport of typical employees
• Average number of commuting days per year.

Emission factors for each mode of transport
MODE/CO2 (kg)/Units
Local Bus: 0.119/passenger-mile
Commuter Rail: 0.161/passenger-mile
Carpool (2 passengers): 0.1715/passenger-mile
Vanpool (5 passengers): 0.0686/passenger-mile
Single Occupancy Vehicle: 0.343/Vehicle-mile

Has the institution completed an inventory within the previous three years to quantify its air pollutant emissions?:
Yes

Annual weight of emissions for::
Weight of Emissions
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 58.65 Tons
Sulfur oxides (SOx) 4.33 Tons
Carbon monoxide (CO) 67.85 Tons
Particulate matter (PM) 12.74 Tons
Ozone (O3) 0 Tons
Lead (Pb) 0 Tons
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) 0.11 Tons
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) 0 Tons
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations 20.10 Tons

Do the air pollutant emissions figures provided include the following sources?:
Yes or No
Major stationary sources Yes
Area sources Yes
Mobile sources No
Commuting No
Off-site electricity production No

A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:

The University calculates its annual pollutant emissions and reports them to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, as is required by the University’s Title V permit. Techniques include calculation methods with AP-42, continuous emission monitors, and fuel use records from the various sources over the calendar year.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

The weight of emissions listed for SOx reflects the emission weight for SO2. The University doesn’t report emission weights for ozone and ODCs because leaks of these pollutants are insignificant. Therefore, the emission weights for these pollutants have been entered as 0 tons/yr.

Additionally, the weight of the PM is the combination of PM-10 and PM-2.5
