A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

The research inventory committee collected the data from Kean USA campuses (Kean Union Campus, Kean Ocean & Manahawkin, and Kean Skylands) and also from Kean University's Wenzhou-Kean campus in China.

The research inventory committee reached out to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, requesting the total number of academic departments at Kean University that included at least one employee conducting research. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs provided the data indicating that there were 35 academic departments at Kean University that included at least one faculty member conducting research. In total, there are 232 full-time faculties that conducted research.

The committee initiated the research inventory process by sending a comprehensive email to all department chairs. The email highlighted the significance of this effort in the University's application for a STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) ranking from the Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). It was explained that conducting a landscape analysis of sustainability activities since 2020 was essential for this application process. The committee expressed its intention to compile a comprehensive list of faculty members involved in sustainability-related scholarly activities, encompassing publications in journals, books, book chapters, conference presentations, and more. Moreover, it was emphasized that sustainability encompasses not only environmental issues but also social and economic dimensions. To facilitate the data collection process, the department chairs were asked to share the email with their respective leadership teams and request them to take a few minutes to add the faculty names and information to the list. The executive directors/chairs were given the option to enter this information for all faculty in their units or delegate the task to the respective faculty members themselves.

After completing the data collection process from the departments and obtaining information on the faculty engaged in sustainability research, the data had to be organized and cleaned. For example, some departments inadvertently included multiple entries for the same faculty member, which required careful review and removal of duplicate records to ensure accurate reporting. Additionally, some departments did not initially provide direct links to the faculty members' sustainability research. Therefore, the committee took the initiative to personally reach out to each individual who had not provided the necessary links.

After the data cleaning process, the analysis revealed that a total of 75 out of 292 (25%) faculty members conducted sustainability research across all campuses, and 23 out of 35 (66%) departments at Kean University had at least one faculty member conducting sustainability research between 2020-2023.
