CSUSM was the 2016 recipient of the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) national award under the category Innovation Award of Merit. This award was granted to CSUSM for our innovated hazardous waste management program.

Over the past three years, CSUSM has worked to create the most environmentally friendly program to dispose of biological waste from our research and educational laboratories. As our campus has grown, so has the hazardous and non-hazardous waste that cannot be placed in the landfill due to environmental regulations. Our laboratories are conducting important and impactful research which Safety, Risk & Sustainability wants to cultivate. However, as research programs expand so does the waste resulting from their projects and programs. This effort was developed to meet the needs of our academic programs but do so with sustainability and waste management at the forefront.

We also won the CSU Facilities Management Best Practice Award for our recent Energy Retrofit project: http://www.calstate.edu/CPDC/FPM_Conference/2016/best-practice-awards/energy-retrofit.shtml

Also, we won a CHSEC Best Practice award for Sustainability in Academics: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: https://chesc.org/best-practice-awards/2016-best-practice-award-winners/
