A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
We used our registered researchers through our IRB process to determine total number of faculty/staff researchers. To determine number of academic departments (or equivalent) we reviewed all the departments the faculty/staff belonged to (within the IRB process), and only counted each academic department once.
For the faculty/staff that conduct(ed) sustainability research we surveyed them and determined whether or not their research fit STARS criteria.
Faculty/staff were only counted in this process. CSUSM prides itself on having a large number of students conduct research, and about half of the IRB results included students. We did not include students in this break down of researchers and departments. However, we did included Extended Learning (continuing education) and the Library (who have tenure-track faculty).
