In the seven years since re-opening, Antioch College has had a strong curricular focus on social justice, sustainability, and “new and better ways of living” through shared governance and community engagement. Our small liberal arts campus offers courses 4 quarters per year, year-round, although we anticipate a calendar shift to a 10-month/year calendar starting in Fall 2018. The data presented here represent an analysis of courses offered during the 12 academic quarters from Fall 2014 through Summer 2017. We have four academic divisions (Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences) and two programs (Co-operative Education and Languages). All four of our academic divisions offer courses that connect to sustainability, and this is a core area of practice for our faculty, students and staff.

Although Antioch College has a small faculty (N=31), 23% of our full-time faculty are currently engaged in some facet of sustainability research, ranging from the performing arts (a fracking-focused play called “Marcellus Shale”), to the Humanities (conference presentation on a collaborative Philosophy-sustainable cooking course), to the Sciences (invasive species biology and ecological impacts). All four of our academic divisions are active in sustainability research (Arts, Humanities, Science, Social Science). In addition, there are many examples of student senior thesis projects that also focus on sustainability at Antioch College, and many of these are interdisciplinary in nature.

Antioch College engages with the surrounding community to build solutions and problem solve around local, regional, and global sustainability challenges. Antioch students engage and support the work of community partners through the Miller Fellowship Program of the Yellow Springs Community Foundation. The College also offers opportunities for community members to engage with sustainability issues through workshops and trainings, such as a Solar Installer Certification Workshop and a Wind Turbine Workshop.

Since its reopening in 2011, Antioch College has renovated three campus buildings to LEED standards. North Hall Dormitory (25330 sq. ft.) is Gold certified and the second oldest building in the U.S. to achieve this standard. The college Wellness Center (44, 600 sq. ft.) is Gold certified and the Arts & Science building (38563 sq. ft.) is Silver certified. 136,553 sq. ft. of building space is heated and cooled by low grade geothermal energy systems.

In 2011, Antioch College developed a campus Master Plan that included renovating three campus buildings to LEED certified status. A Gold Certified Dormitory with 50 KW roof mounted solar array, a Gold Certified Wellness Center and a Silver Certified Arts & Science building. A new Central Geothermal Plant provides heating and cooling to 40% of the campus building footprint. Antioch College also installed a 1 megawatt field mounted solar array via a Purchase Power Agreement that feeds the central geothermal plant transformer.

Antioch Kitchens play a critical role creating community on campus - providing family-style seating where students, faculty and staff come together to nourish minds and bodies. With a focus on farm-to-table and from-scratch cooking, much of Antioch Kitchens' food is grown and delivered from Antioch Farm and/or local farmers. Healthy meals are lovingly presented as first-rate meals with unlimited portions, and all meal services include vegetarian and vegan options.

The Antioch College Landscape Master Plan divides our campus into zones that specify various levels of horticultural management and purpose, ranging from the Antioch Farm (managed as a non-certified but functionally organic farm), to our 92-acre main campus grounds, to our 973-acre Glen Helen Nature Preserve. For the purposes of the OP-9 Grounds section of STARS we are focusing on the 92-acre campus areas that are intensively managed (mowed, farmed, horticultural plantings, unmowed naturalized areas on the main campus, etc.). Within the zones on our 92-acre main campus, the Antioch College Campus Landscape Master Plan specifies management without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Pest control, when needed, is applied using IPM monitor and manage approaches and if used we use organic and biocontrol compounds only.

Sustainability, as a core area of practice at Antioch College, is reflected in the College strategic planning documents and processes. This work is coordinated by the Antioch College Campus Sustainability Committee which consists of representatives from across the College including faculty, co-op, staff, and students. In just a few years, Antioch College has participated in the Real Food Challenge and become second in the nation for percentage of real food served, created and passed key policies around vehicle idling, computer purchasing, cleaning product purchasing, office paper use and purchasing, and gained board approval for a campus landscaping master plan.

Antioch College deeply values diversity and is committed to promoting inclusion and diversity on campus and offering support to students from diverse backgrounds. In 2015, the College conducted a comprehensive campus-wide diversity audit to focus its diversity efforts and to develop a shared understanding of diversity at Antioch. Using results from the audit, the College's Task Force for Diversity created the College's Strategic Plan for Diversity; the plan is currently being implemented, evaluated, and assessed to ensure that the College is making progress toward diversity and inclusion goals.
