A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a group of elected representatives from each of the residence halls. Members serving on the RHA are allowed to serve on either the social justice and diversity, community service and sustainability, and social programming.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Members of the committee meet on a weekly basis throughout the school year. During the session, they learn about topics in sustainability and social justice that they can address within the residence hall system and determine how to implement activities associated with these topics.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

A $10 Student Activity Fee is used to fund this program. From the fee, $7 goes to each of the halls for activities, while $3 goes to the Residence Hall Association.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):

All members must submit an application through the AmeriCorps website to the program. After review of this application a phone interview is scheduled to see how well suited the applicant is for our organization and vise versa. They are interested in finding individuals that have a passion for sustainability, living greeen, and the environment. Members must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for our program and we are usually interested in individuals that are self-starters who have shown a passion for community service. They have several members that come from out of state as well as many members who choose to serve their local community. 24 current or former Green Iowa members have been UNI students.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

Generally, members receive comprehensive training through a combination of lectures, field trips, and hands-on skill-building. Training areas include: weatherization, energy education, HVAC, insulation, communication, conflict management, leadership, disaster relief, basic first aid/CPR, volunteer management, general construction, etc. Trainers are recruited from the community, from UNI, and from our within our organization. Training facilitators include: OSHA, the American Red Cross, the Northeast Iowa Community College, and many more. Field trips include: coal power plants, recycling plants, waste water management, etc. Several of our members have recently obtained BPI certification, which qualifies them as certified energy auditors. Members are encouraged to continue building energy efficiency knowledge throughout the service term through team trainings and personal development.

The University of Northern Iowa provides Green Iowa AmeriCorps with in-kind match ($100,000 of the total $587,000 budget) through time, office space, network access, phones, office supplies, and paperwork processing, etc. They receive staff support through our access to working with UNI administrative assistants. They also receive support through the Office of Sponsored Programs in regards to grant collaboration.
