Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Development of Engineering Guidelines for Living Shoreline Projects in New Jersey

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

A faculty-led team of engineering staff and undergraduate and graduate students revised existing state engineering guidance (originally created by Stevens) for living shorelines projects in natural settings and developed new guidance specifically for developed shorelines. At the request of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Stevens updated the original guidance document for natural shorelines to include advances in the science and engineering of living shorelines that reflect nearly a decade of progress designing and implementing living shorelines projects in New Jersey. In addition, Stevens authored a new document which outlines best practices for incorporating living shoreline design principles along urban/developed shorelines. The two documents will serve as a template for consultants designing and constructing living shoreline projects, regulators permitting the projects, and academics and NGO’s evaluating the success of the projects.
