Whitman College and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on May 19, 2017. The document constitutes a formal commitment to collaborate on the development of curricula focused on Native American studies while strengthening Native American recruitment and retention at Whitman. It also provides a framework to identify areas of shared research interests and facilitate the transition of CTUIR students into institutions of higher learning.

It is the mission of the Whitman College Glean Team to raise awareness on issues pertaining to food insecurity in the Walla Walla area. We hope to engage the Whitman community as well as the greater Walla Walla community through harvesting and donating fresh produce to the Blue Mountain Action Council food distribution warehouse. BMAC then distributes the donated produce to the food banks within the Walla Walla area. In addition to encouraging participation on regular gleans throughout the harvest season, our mission will be accomplished through on campus film showcases, symposiums, and other events related to gleaning and food insecurity. https://whitman.presence.io/organization/glean-team

The Whitman Community Fellow Initiative funds a cohort of juniors and seniors to spend an academic year working part-time at a prominent Walla Walla Valley organization to address some of the area’s social, economic and cultural challenges. Community Fellows meet successful, high-level leaders in Walla Walla and receive professional mentoring, targeted career development guidance, and broad exposure to local organizations in addition to the one where they work. Community Fellows also learn about important issues in southeastern Washington. Recent partner organizations are: United Way of the Blue Mountains, Walla Walla Symphony, Tri-State Steel Headers Salmon Enhancement Group, Providence Health Care Group, Walla Walla Community Change Team, The Health Center, Valley Residential Services, Children's Home Society of Washignton and Walla Walla Community Council. https://www.whitman.edu/after-whitman/student-engagement-center/career-development/internships/community-fellow-program
