A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:

The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) is a research-practice partnership within the Harvard Graduate School of Education devoted to studying the postsecondary faculty experience. A component of their research includes the administration of the Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey at more than 250 universities. During the 2019-20 academic year, the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) participated in the Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey for the second time. The inaugural administration was during the 2016-17 academic year. Participation in this survey effort supports UT Austin's ability to attract and retain the best and brightest scholars and teachers, increase the satisfaction of current faculty, and make UT Austin a great place to work.

A comparison of tenure status, gender, and race/ethnicity categories between the UT Austin faculty population of interest and the survey sample demonstrated that the survey sample was within one to three percent representation of the population on most variables. The one exception to this concerned gender. There was a six percent under-representation of men/trans men. More faculty who identified as women or trans women completed the survey compared to those who identified as men or trans men, which is similar to the 2017 survey sample.
Each of twenty-five themes was represented by at least three five-point Likert scale items on the survey. The average score for each theme represents UT Austin’s benchmark score.

In addition to the main survey themes illustrated by the benchmark scores, faculty were also asked a series of questions assessing their overall views of the university including what they consider to be the best and worst aspects. Furthermore, UT Austin added a series of items to the survey that asked for faculty viewpoints on campus climate issues.

Out of 2,724 faculty who met survey participation criteria, 34 percent (or 915) responded to the survey. Faculty met survey participation criteria if their teaching load during Fall 2019 was at least 50% and their position title did not suggest their experience with UT Austin was temporary. All Colleges and Schools were included in the survey administration, except for The Dell Medical School.
