A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :

Freshman Orientation is held seven times and Transfer Orientation is held 3 times during the summer and together they serve ??% of incoming undergraduate students. In 2021, these orientations were offered in both hybrid and all-virtual models. New Student Services in the Dean of Students office coordinates Orientation.

During Freshman Orientation, all students are required to attend a lunch session hosted by their respective colleges. In 2021, Office of Sustainability and Resource Recovery implemented a waste diversion system during these lunch sessions. Student staff monitored compost, recycling, and landfill trash bin stations, showing incoming students how to properly discard of their lunch waste. They also gave brief presentations while students ate to explain the importance and process for properly diverting their waste. Through this programming, all incoming freshmen participating in the hybrid orientation model received hands-on experience thinking about and properly discarding their waste on campus.

Additionally, in 2021 all students (both hybrid and virtual) at this orientation were offered the opportunity to participate in an optional sustainability workshop. This workshop introduced students to campus sustainability and provided an opportunity for students to ask questions.
