A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives, including how workers are engaged in monitoring and advising on health and safety programs:
Seneca employees are engaged in monitoring health and safety programs mainly through Workplace Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC’s) and Health and Safety Representatives (HSR’s). JHSC’s and HSR’s conduct monthly workplace inspections and quarterly meetings. JHSC members may also provide formal recommendations to management based on the employees and/or JHSC member observations. Employees may also report concerns such as Indoor Air Quality issues, slip and trip hazards directly to their immediate supervisors and/or the Seneca OHS Office. As per Seneca OHS-2.1.e.01 Occupational Health and Safety Communication Program, one or several of the following methods may be used to communicate Occupational health and safety information to the Seneca community:
• New employee orientation
• Safety talks
• In class and online training sessions
• Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings and inspections
• Staff meetings (e.g. departmental HR staff meetings, faculty welcome back meetings);
• Health and Safety bulletin board
• Digitall display units across all campuses
• Electronic communication:
- E-mail: for example OHS policies, programs and training requirements may be e-mailed to all Seneca employees directly and also via links through SeneNews (senenews@senecacollege.ca)
- Seneca Blackboard (my.senecacollege.ca): Approved Seneca OHS Policies, procedures, JHSC portals, etc. are posted on the Seneca Blackboard for the information of all employees
- MyPD training portal: This training portal is used as the main site for providing OHS and other mandatory trainings such as HS awareness training, WHMIS, fall safety, MSD awareness, AODA, safe manual material handling, etc.
- Cority OHS Software will be used to record incidents and communicate health and safety actions to supervisors and workers.
