JMU has a total of 93 best management practices (BMPs) that treat stormwater from across campus along with 4,000 linear feet of natural stream restoration and associated riparian buffers implemented in the last 5 years. These stormwater BMPs include practices such as a green roof, rainwater harvesting, bioretention filters, and various manufactured practices. The University also has a 1.6 acre naturalized meadow with 29 species of native plants and adjacent 2 acre tree planting area with 25 species of trees that are used as an educational landscape.

As a state agency within the Commonwealth of Virginia, JMU is required to implement stormwater facilities for all projects with a disturbed area of 1 acre or more. JMU’s MS4 Plan and associated policies and procedures - such as for stormwater management facilities, land-disturbing activities, and illicit discharge detection and elimination - ensure that not only are new construction or re-development projects meeting certain thresholds, but that best management practices are implemented throughout the campus. A full-time Stormwater Coordinator inspects construction sites for conformance with policies and also provides training to contractors on best management practices.
