Voluntary Gender Identity and Pronoun Selection

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

CSU Channel Islands provides students the option to self-select their gender identity, sexual orientation, gender expression, and preferred name through their myCI account.

Providing this information is optional and all responses are kept private and secure. No campus staff has access to this information. The data will not be used for discriminatory purposes. This information is used to provide services to all of our student populations. This information is used for summary demographic reporting where no individual applicant's identity will be revealed. In compliance with the CA Education Code, this summary information will be made available on CSU and campus websites and to the California Legislature.

Preferred name is an option that is available to students via their myCI Student Center. Students may choose to use a preferred name rather than a primary (legal) name in the classroom and other areas on campus. Some examples of students who opt to use a preferred name include international students, transgender students, students who prefer to use their middle names, and students who have nicknames, like John or Junior.
