Has the institution banned or eliminated the on-site sales and distribution of at least one type of single-use disposable plastic?:
Yes

A brief description of the single-use disposable plastics that have been banned or eliminated:

PLASTIC STRAWS - In August 2020, the University of Pittsburgh's Dining Services eliminated single-use plastic straws from campus. At that time, Pitt's Dining Services transitioned over from cold cups to sippy cup lids designed to eliminate the need for straws. Straws are available by request, but those straws are compostable PLA or paper rather than plastic.

STYROFOAM - Also in 2020, Pitt's dining provider (Compass Group / Chartwells) officially banned Styrofoam from foodservice.

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAGS - The University of Pittsburgh has worked to reduce and eliminate single-use plastic bag use on campus since 2014, helping prevent over 2 million single-use plastic bags from being used through the BYO(Bag) program (which was recognized as a national best practice in the 2018 AASHE Sustainable Campus Index).

In October 2023, the City of Pittsburgh's single-use plastic bag ban went into effect. In compliance with City law, the University of Pittsburgh officially no longer provides or sells single-use plastic bags at any retail or restaurant outlet on campus.
