Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

- Data is based on an October 31, 2022 snapshot.
- There are some positions where UVic helps administer payroll (i.e., grant-funded and agency positions). UVic is not the employer of these positions nor do they provide the funding for these positions. Therefore, these roles have been excluded.
- Only casual employees who had earnings in October 2022 are included in the snapshot. There are 1,882 employees who are registered as casual but only 843 of them had earnings in October 2022. This results in us having 6,031 total staff.
- Employees who are students are excluded. There are 1,611 student employees, and 4,420 non-student employees.
- Retroactive pay is included. All unions at UVic bargained for new collective agreements this year. Most positions received a $0.25 + 3.25% general wage increase. These wage increases are retroactive to the October 31, 2022 (see https://www.uvic.ca/hr/assets/docs/labourrelations/salaryschedules/negotiated-salary-increases-at-a-glance---all-groups_2022-2024.pdf).

For Part 1
- When we exclude benefits, 85.3% of employees make $24.29 or more (3,772/4,420 = 85.3%). Benefit exclusion for this is included in Part 3 and calculation information is provided below:

For Part 3
- The precise benefits amount per employee isn't available. The Budget Office recommends that units set aside 20% of employee pay to contribute to a central benefit account (https://www.uvic.ca/budget/info-for/budget-administrators/staff-salary-funding/index.php). Therefore, a flat benefit rate of 20% is applied to all positions.
- Continuing positions working less than .50 FTE may receive benefits depending on circumstances. Employees temporarily working less than .50 FTE continue to receive benefits if they have an approved medical accomodation or are participating in a gradual return to work program. People who work less than .50 FTE make up 0.8% of continuing employees, making this a very small group (26 employees whose primary job is less than 0.5 FTE/3,286 continuing employees = 0.8%).
- As of October 31, 2022, we have 3,286 non-student continuing employees.
- The hourly rates for employees aren't calculated when employees are on leave. Thus, employees on leave have been excluded from the search for the lowest paid employee.
- The lowest paid non-student continuing employee has an hourly rate of $27.30. Therefore, the lowest paid employee makes 112.4% of a living wage ($27.30 ÷ $24.29 = 112.4%)
