A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:

USC conducted the NACCC Student Survey in October 2022, with a total of 2,693 undergraduate students and 4,561 graduate students participating in the survey. The National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates (NACCC) is a trio of quantitative surveys on campus racial climate administered annually at colleges and universities across the United States. Participating institutions receive their data files, along with a customized report that includes results and practical recommendations.

The NACCC includes six content areas essential to measure campus racial climate: (1) Mattering and Affirmation assesses how students are affirmed and the extent to which they believe they matter on campus; (2) Cross-Racial Engagement examines the meaningfulness of and extent to which students interact across racial and ethnic differences; (3) Racial Learning and Literacy assesses how and where students learn the racial identities of themselves and other people and to what extent their learning environments reflect racial diversity; (4) Encounters with Racial Stress investigates stress experienced by students due to conversations and overall experiences surrounding race; (5) Appraisals of Institutional Commitment assesses how institutions deal with racial conflicts on campus and their commitment in creating a diverse learning environment; (6) Impact of External Environments assesses students’ sense of security and their encounters with racism in the cities/towns surrounding their campuses, online, and on social media.
The survey results, as detailed in the summary reports, were presented by the six content areas, and action items were proposed to address areas in need of improvement and to mitigate the equity gaps identified in the data. More information: https://race.usc.edu/colleges/naccc/

Although not applicable to the timeline for this credit, USC’s Office of Culture, Ethics and Compliance-Culture Journey is currently drafting the 2024 USC Culture Values Poll, which will be distributed to USC students, staff, postdocs and faculty in January 2024. The 2022 NACCC Student Survey results provide recommended action items for each of the six content areas: (1) Mattering and Affirmation; (2) Cross-Racial Engagement; (3) Racial Learning and Literacy; (4) Encounters with Racial Stress; (5) Appraisals of Institutional Commitment; and (6) Impact of External Environments. The proposed action items address areas in need of improvement and processes and methods that can be used to mitigate the equity gaps identified in the data.
