A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

As of fall 2013 UMass Dining has now adopted an official plastic bag ban in all retail and residential dining locations, including all Dining Common's areas throughout the university, all cafes, and convenience store areas.

This change took place after a 'plastic bag ban' campaign was conducted by a Sustainable UMass undergraduate student leader on the UMass Amherst campus in the spring of 2013.

The launch of the ban also coincided with the sale of new reusable UMass Dining tote bags designed to encourage students to make the transition to reusable storage containers. Bags are now sold in the Hampden Market, Franklin Market, Worcester Market, and Hampshire Market where plastic bags were previously in use.
