In 2011, Sheridan College established a new governance structure for sustainability. An Office for Sustainability was created with a mandate, to redefine ‘operational systems’, reduce Sheridan’s environmental footprint, harness efficiencies through Energy and Waste initiatives and translate this learning to create strategic value through curriculum development, student learning opportunities, research and new community and industry partnerships for the College. Universities and Colleges are increasingly becoming a focus for discussion and debate on all aspects of sustainability, including resource conservation, habitat preservation, climate change, social equity and economic resiliency. As such, in 2012-2013 Sheridan College will continue to explore the various dimensions of sustainability through research, teaching and learning as well as exemplify sustainability in its operations and related activities both on and off campus.

In the 2012-2013 academic year, the Office for Sustainability will continue to build on its EIGHT important strategic initiatives:

1) Integrated Energy Master Plan (IEMP) involving 4 campuses with guidance on new Mississauga construction- a 25 year Energy Plan which will re-envision Sheridan’s Energy future and set aggressive consumption (50%) and greenhouse gas reductions (60%) with a goal of delivering Decision Grade proposal to Sheridan’s Board of Governor’s in December, 2012
2) Zero-Waste initiatives
3) Institutional Sustainability Reporting through the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) a comprehensive sustainability tracking and assessment initiative which covers all aspects of Sheridan’s operations, curriculum, research, policies and partnerships.
4) Website and Communication Strategy development
5) Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory and
6) Leadership Council for Sustainability taskforce development (Energy, Waste, Curriculum), a multi department/disciplinary Council for emerging leadership development at Sheridan.
7) President’s Creative Challenge for Sustainability – Year 2.
8) Development of a Green Revolving Fund & implementation

It is anticipated that over 100+ students will have gained experience through these combined strategic initiatives between 2011-2013.
