Lafayette College is sustainable. (Sustainability is defined as responsibly interacting with the planet by living within environmental bounds in order to maintain natural resources and avoid jeopardizing the ability for future generations to meet their needs.)
It is easy to be environmentally friendly and sustainable as a student on campus. It is easy to understand Lafayette College’s waste management system - trash,
recycling, and composting. It is easy to use and access Lafayette College’s waste management system - trash,
recycling, and composting. Environmental sustainability was a factor in my decision to attend Lafayette College.
As a student, I value and support Lafayette’s sustainability efforts.
Lafayette College could be more sustainable and do more to support sustainable
efforts.
I think composting is an important aspect of sustainability.
Prior to this survey, I was aware that Lafayette College composts.
Any other thoughts/suggestions/ideas about environmentalism and sustainability
on campus?

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:

With faculty oversight and support from the Office of Sustainability, student government constructed a survey instrument. The survey was widely distributed via email and through data collection efforts at highly trafficked areas on campus. The survey gathered a total of 309 responses, which was roughly 12% of the student body.

A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:

This survey revealed that students would like to see composting campus wide at Lafayette and see it as a way the college could improve sustainability. The survey also revealed students find it challenging to understand the current waste streams at the college. This survey builds on previous surveys that revealed Lafayette community values water conservation and management and LaFarm is an important part of our campus sustainability efforts, one that students
support. Additionally former survey results said: Lafayette students believe that most environmental initiative areas
are ‘very important’. Other than two initiative areas (biodiversity and ecology, transportation), more than 50% of respondents indicated that the environmental topic was “very important.”Lafayette students overwhelmingly support current policies that reduce the college’s greenhouse gas emissions (93.8% agree or strongly agree), meet building energy standards (93.2% agree or strongly agree), or encourage less energy use (90.9% agree or strongly agree). 66.7% of students said that they feel that sustainability is a part of Lafayette's campus culture and 33.3% responded no.
