Student Sustainability Leadership Program

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

Each year, the Office of Sustainability employs six paid interns to receive formal leadership training, skills-based training, and the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the Office of Sustainability staff on the most pressing sustainability challenges facing the university today. Each student serves a specific role. There are two students who make up the PR team, two students who make up the Engagement team, one student who works as the Social Justice Coordinator, and one student who works as the assistant to the executive and associate directors.

A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):

All students are targeted by the Student Sustainability Leadership Program through in person events, social media outreach and speaking in courses. Both undergraduate students and graduate students are invited all of our events. Although Graduate students comprise a smaller portion of the participants in our events, they regularly engage via email and do attend our evening events that are more accessible to them.

Our students regularly support us in teaching courses and providing guest lectures. They also helped revamp the Sustainability Guide which will be an online guide on basic sustainability tips and tools on campus. In the spring of 2021 and 2022, they implemented a Student Center Take Over Event, with the goal of educating undergraduates on the topics of environmental racism and the harms of plastic. These events were semi-passive allowing for the event to reach a greater audience.

Student Waste Educators Program

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

The Student Waste Educators Program trains students on the topic of waste through a global, local, and intersectional lens. Student educators learn how to properly sort waste on campus in accordance with Casella, Bentley's waste provider's, standards. They also learn about how much waste Bentley generates and the goals that the Office of Sustainability is working towards in regard to waste minimization. The Student Waste Educators are then charged with educating their peers throughout the year, with a goal of educating at least 10 people.

A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (2nd program):

The Student Waste Educators are charged with educating two groups of five, so a total of ten people. They are free to educate fellow Bentley students, and peers outside of Bentley and beyond. The Student Waste Educators have their peers scan a QR code before the educators give their lesson on waste and after. This allows the Office of Sustainability to track those who were reached and how effective they found the training. This training is both asynchronous and in-person, allowing The Office of Sustainability to reach a larger audience. Two in-person events were held, the first event was in the fall term solely conducted by the Office of Sustainability, and the second being in collaboration with the Residential Assistant of the Blue Print Defined Community.
