Santa Barbara County Regional Climate Collaborative

Carbon Markets: Demand-side Considerations:
UC Santa Barbara, Dudek, City of Palo Alto, and the City of San Luis Obispo are either procuring offsets or have set up a program to meet their carbon mitigation goals with offsets. This webinar will explore the demand side considerations of the carbon offset market through the perspectives of a local government, a university, and a project developer.

Yes

A list or brief description of the sustainability resource center or awards program and submission(s):
UCSB submitted a case study on the Interactive Learning Pavilion (ILP) to the Central Coast Green Building Council (CCGBC) for consideration for an award. The ILP received LEED Gold earlier in the year and was then awarded by the CCGBC with the Green Schools Award. The CCGBC will also take the information submitted in our application and use that to share the best practices applied in the building design.

Has the institution had employees or students serving on a board or committee of a sustainability network or conference during the previous three years?:
Yes

A list or brief description of the board or committee appointment(s):
Jewel Persad, Campus Sustainability Manager, and Katie Maynard, Acting Director of Sustainability, both participate as steering committee members in the Santa Barbara County Climate Collaborative, which is an organization working to bridge across sectors to catalyze and advance equitable climate solutions throughout Santa Barbara County.

Katie Maynard is also an affiliate of Electric Drive 805, a coalition dedicated to achieving a rapid, equitable transition to plug-in electric vehicles. Electric Drive 805 leads local action to increase access to today’s cleaner, more efficient electric vehicles. The goal is to reduce emissions from the largest source of pollution in the 805 region: the cars and trucks on the roads.

Yes

A brief description of the mentoring relationship and activities:
UCSB sustainability staff meet multiple times a month with sustainability staff from other UC campuses to share best practices and advise each other on how to advance sustainability efforts.

Has the institution had employees or students serving as peer reviewers of another institution’s sustainability data and/or STARS submission during the previous three years?:
Yes

A brief description of the peer review activities:
As the Co-chair of the UC Systemwide Waste working group, Jennifer Bowser, a UCSB employee is responsible for reviewing waste diversion data submitted to the committee by all 10 UC campuses annually. She reviewed the data submitted in August of 2023 for the 2022/23 fiscal year.
