A brief description of the institution's library support for sustainability research and learning:

Materials selection practices embrace sustainability and result in offering numerous sources of information on the topic. Subscriptions to large full text journal aggregations, focused indexing & abstracting services, and specific digital reference tools offer broad access to current periodical literature on the topic of sustainability. Some examples include Academic Search Complete, Encyclopedia of Soils in the Environment, Environment Complete, GeoRef, GreenFile, Public Affairs Index, and Science Reference Center to name but a few. In addition, selected e-Reference books are highlighted within our listing of electronic resources, such as Encyclopedia of American Environmental History, Encyclopedia of Global Warming and Climate Change, Encyclopedia of Pollution, and the Encyclopedia of Environmental Issues within the Salem Science database.

The Libraries subscribes to an academic ebook collection of about 140,000 titles. A subject search for “sustainability” returns 92 ebooks and a subject search for variants of the term returns 1,370 ebooks including various related subjects such as sustainable agriculture and sustainable energy.

The Libraries’ journal tracker, TDNet, contains 14 full text journals with the word “sustainability” in the title, seven of which are contained in DOAJ – Directory of Open Access Journals, and the remainder in Environment Complete, Emerald, and direct from the publisher. A search for journals with variants of “sustainability” in the title results in 56 journals.

A subject search of “sustainab*” in the Libraries’ catalog yields 631 different subject areas which contain 2,408 entries.

The Libraries is involved in the institutional curricular process whereby changes to the curriculum are proposed and adopted. The Libraries’ thereby gains knowledge of additions to the curriculum which may call for additional resources devoted to sustainability and can purchase them in advance of the course(s) being offered.

Subject Guides are permanently on the Libraries’ Website and we conduct Information Literacy sessions upon faculty request.
