A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

Indiana State University took part in a nation wide campus challenge to gather the most pledges during April 2018 for pledges against plastic straws. Offices all across campus became involved in the campaign including the Office of Sustainability, Residential Life, Campus Life, and many more. It began as a word of mouth campaign and garnered support across campus and in the local community.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

During this campaign, Indiana State University became the #1 school in pledges against plastic straws and galvanized a large majority of the student population. The campaign prompted students to buy metal, reusable straws and stop using plastic. It began conversations across campus about the utilization of plastic materials in dining.

Recyclemania

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.

IN Recyclemania 2018 Indiana State University recycled 84,394 lbs. of material, about 6 pounds per capita.

Fellows Program - The ISU Sustainability Fellowship Program exists to both advance sustainability in the region and on campus through interdisciplinary, experiential, results oriented projects. Each Fellow is responsible for leading one project per year. Additionally, Fellows act as an on campus advisory board for the Office of Sustainability. One project has resulted in the creation of a perma-culture food forest, one project measures food waste in dining halls, and one project is working to bring composting to campus.
